good fantasy baseball karma

by rebeca on March 9, 2009

It’s nearly time for the regular season to get under way – and I’m incredibly excited!  This is my first year in a fantasy league and I’m all set to impress the hell out of my coworkers who make up the fellow managers in the league.

Today we are going to take a look at how to spread good karma during your fantasy baseball draft.  It’s as simple as this: you can’t.  It’s every man, woman, child and animal for themselves – and if I want bragging rights, I need to be crafty, and I need to be deliberate in my planning. I’m a good karma kinda gal, but I’m no saint.  These suckas better watch out!!

Wish me luck!

travel karma

by rebeca on March 5, 2009

Karma Cooler is shipping off to warm, sunny Tampa Florida for quality time with family and YANKEES SPRING TRAINING!  The timing of the trip is perfect when you need to escape the bitter cold and are ready to trade in NFL Draft speculation for Fantasy Baseball draft plans.  We’re bringing the love to Tampa and are poised to spread lots of good karma!

So here is one idea for spreading good karma when traveling – inevitably, you’ll be sitting next to a complete stranger on a plane at least once in your flying life.  Be aware of them, and try not to focus on the fact that they are hogging the arm rest, but try to be kind.  I don’t suggest incessantly chatting your seat mate up, but offer to lend a magazine, offer a piece of gum during the descent, and don’t get pissy when they need to get up and go to the bathroom.  These aren’t random acts of kindness, but they certainly can go a long way in your good karma spreading efforts.

happiness is a discovery away

by rebeca on March 5, 2009

Lots of stuff going on lately, fueled by this shitty economy… needless to say, we at Karma Cooler are truly sorry for the unannounced temporary hiatus.  My spirits have been a bit down lately but I will say, that there is one site whose feeds make me smile (other than Hot Chicks with Douchebags), and that is Serendipity Factory’s Happy Discoveries.

When you hit the site, you see exactly what they are all about:  “We seek out people in the world who are doing positive or creative things. People who are being true to themselves and living their dreams. This is simply a collection of random happy discoveries.”  And I should add, they do it in such a cute and crafty-looking way.  Make sure to add them to your feeds or check them out every Wednesday when they post their fix for the mid-week blues, calling it Anti-Woe Wednesday.  Some of my vinyl requiem friends might like the munny video that made it there yesterday!  Go give Traci and Tammy a shout:

one compliment a day

by rebeca on February 24, 2009

Often when I sit back and consider where I find inspiration, I think of my friend Rain.  She has such an amazing grasp of reality and yet her appreciation for life is unmatched.  Not too long ago she mentioned a series of acts of kindness that I thought was a great idea:

In her words:  “i’m on a mission to give at least 1 random stranger a compliment a day. not only is this positive for the times we’re living in but you make someone’s day and it makes your day brighter. WIN/WIN!

I couldn’t agree more.  If you’re looking for one way to spread good karma regularly, this is a nifty idea that doesn’t cost you anything more than going out of your way to communicate with someone you might not otherwise speak to.  If you really want to go the extra mile, pay a compliment to someone that you otherwise might not get along with.  I assure you, this is not easy.  But there is a great deal of satifaction and pride to be felt when you can be the bigger person.

In any event, I don’t recommend paying compliments just to meet a quota you’ve set.  Be genuine and be truthful.  If you don’t have a true opportunity to do so, don’t force it – but be aware of your environment and take the opportunity when it’s in front of you.  Mark Twain once said “I can live for two months on a good compliment.”  You know it feels good, so pass it on.

If you don’t know how, head on over to WikiHow’s page on “How to Pay the Right Compliments

Karma Rescue

by rebeca on February 19, 2009

In one of my quests to get a pulse for how karma is being represented on the interwebs, I came across Karma Rescue, a non profit that “saves at-risk dogs from the high kill Los Angeles area shelters. Karma provides each dog a new beginning and finds them safe and suitable permanent homes through adoption, advocacy and education.”

They get a huge thumbs up from me, and I’d be willing to bet, from a bunch of the beautiful people who support Karma Cooler.  Now just to throw in a little more cute factor, favorite this post and visit it often when you need a moment to sit back and readjust your perspective.  Be prepared for massive cuteness:

Playing for Change: Peace Through Music

by rebeca on February 17, 2009

Submitted for your viewing pleasure, here’s a video I came across via Cause Global’s feed.  As stated over there, the clip is from an award-winning documentary featuring street singers all over the globe performing, their individual styles being put together to create one amazing song – this one is “Stand by Me.”  The documentary is called Playing for Change: Peace Through Music – I recommend taking a minute if you are into music and/or can appreciate the significance of these individuals coming together and contributing to this effort.

Twestival and More Random Kindness

by rebeca on February 16, 2009

We’re back from temporary hiatus and excited to tell you about all the great karma that was spread during Random Acts of Kindness week!  Thursday was a double treat for me, because that night was Twestival – a global gathering of Twitter users meeting up to party, have fun, and most importantly, raise money to benefit charity:water.  People got together in something like 185 cities around the globe, pretty impressive.  I decided to come to Twestival armed with a couple of these envelopes.  They had my card on it to let people know they were welcome here at Karma Cooler.

I gave a couple of these out during the course of the evening.  A couple were given to people at the Cheesecake Factory the following night.  One recipient was not so random: I left an envelope in the check holder for our server on top of his tip.  I was assured by my sweetheart that even though the person wasn’t random, the act was something he probably wouldn’t have expected.  I felt better about this.  I also really enjoyed walking out with him and passing lots of people waiting for tables.  I walked up to a random woman and handed her the envelope.  She looked like she didn’t want to take it (hahaha do you blame her???) but she did and I walked away immediately.  I thought it was pretty fun – I just hope all these people like Dunkin Donuts (I know at least one does!!)

My friends were up to a LOT of good too – I’m really inspired by them and was so excited they were so willing to help spread good karma throughout the week too.  From helping others with their taxes, to giving gift cards to strangers and friends alike, to gifting ME with a Kiva gift certificate – these amazing women did their part to share kindness with others so selflessly that I am inspired and proud to know them.  Please go visit them and leave a little love for them:

So a little more on Twestival – it was a great experience, and I am so glad to have been a part of it.  Though most people came with or met up with, people they already knew.  That makes it a little more difficult to make new connections.  Though I did have the pleasure of meeting some really wonderful people.  First, there was a group of girls who I met while waiting in line to get in, that welcomed me to their group no questions asked, and I thought that was pretty awesome.  They didn’t make me feel like they felt bad for me being there by myself hahaha – I hope they stop by here at some point, I enjoyed their company.  I also actually got to meet someone I was already connected with on twitter, Brian Simpson of the Roger Smith Hotel.  I started following him after watching some of a recent Social Media Breakfast online, and was introduced to him by skyle, one of the SMB organizers.  They were both so warm and sweet – and I couldn’t help but tell Brian just how amazing a job I think he and the Roger Smith crew do embracing social media.  The hotel is definitely now on my NYC must list, whether for enjoying a bit of Brian’s F&B or even an overnight stay.

The event was great, though in all honesty, felt like another night out at a club with how difficult it was to engage in conversation.  I enjoyed seeing Scott Harrison speak – he’s the founder of charity:water – it made it feel a bit more real, and while he announced that night that the NY event had raised enough money to fund 3 new wells in Ethiopia, it turned out that by the next day when they counted the totals, we funded 4 wells.  It feels good to know that I had a part in that.  Of course, it wouldn’t be a New York City party without someone like this guy – but everyone loves the Becky Duck, so I can’t blame him either.  More pics at my Flickr.

Munchkin Magazine Love

by rebeca on February 11, 2009

We are midway through Random Acts of Kindness week and I’m so excited that so many of you are doing so many wonderful things for others.  That selflessness is what this week is all about – and I really hope we all keep paying it forward beyond now!!

I’m thinking my past two days haven’t been as inspiring as I’d like but I kept to my promise to do at least one kind thing a day, so for that I am feeling pretty fulfilled.  Yesterday I picked up a box of munchkins for the crew at work to enjoy.  I’m feeling less inspired about this one because it’s not uncommon for me to do that.  Today was a little bit of a different story, though.

I have a good friend who really goes out of her way to do selfless things for other people all the time.  She’s such an advocate for all her friends in their respective ventures.  She does so much to make this world a better place on many different levels, and she’s just an amazing friend and human being.  I scouted out a magazine that I thought she would really like, that seemed pretty nifty and fitting, and bought her a gift subscription.   I sent an email to let her know because I didn’t want them to start showing up and for her to wonder why hahaha… it’s a small thing and doesn’t nearly express my appreciation for who she is and the amazing example she sets, but I was really stoked to reveal the surprise.

Do you have someone in your life like that?

practice what you preach and stuff

by rebeca on February 9, 2009

Well, I’m happy to report that Random Acts of Kindness Week is off and running!  Are you using it as a totally awesome excuse to do good sh*t for others?  Well, I have to hold myself liable for practicing what I preach, though any week, day or moment can be one of Random Acts of Kindness.

I kicked off the week with a fun little gesture.  I had my follow up appointment with the podiatrist today to remove my stitches from surgery.  I stopped by a local florist and had two bright and happy looking bouquets made up before heading over to the office.  When I walked in, I handed one bouquet each to the two women who run the front of the business.  Each time I come in there, they are both so sweet and have been more than patient answering my 101 questions.

The best part was how surprised they were – it seemed like they really couldn’t believe a patient would want to thank them in that way.  And that made it sooooo incredibly worth it for me.  Their gratitude made me smile, and I was just so happy to make them smile too.

How about you?  Did you make someone smile today?
